Motaku Art Contest

How it works:
You may develop any theme you wish, thus we grant you much artistic freedom. For example, given that Motaku 2010 was in October, the artist chose to have various demons as her characters and in 2012 Our artist chose a beach theme since our new home has a water resort attached. These are just examples, please do whatever you want. If you don’t have a literal theme such as the previous examples, we ask that you have a definite visual style in mind for the work you do that ties them all together.

We will be choosing one artist per year, so our artwork will have cohesion for the year, not a jumble of random pieces.

Motaku reserves the right to choose multiple winners from this contest. Should this happen, one winner will be notified as the artist for 2014, one for 2015, etc. This is because we know so many good artists, and there is such potential for awesome themes and art, that we really want to use all the great work we get, and so artists will be less likely to have put in a lot of work for nothing.

Should you be chosen, we will expect between 8 to 10 pieces for the year we assign you. All pieces need to be a minimum of 5.5 by 8.5 inches at 300 dpi in as workable a format as possible. (Such as leaving transparency in a psd instead of saving to a tiff or bmp with a white background.) Native formats such as psd, and ai, preferred. We have some extra specifications for one or two of the pieces which will be detailed when we contact winners.

Rules:
1) All art and characters must be the original work of the artist, no fan art is allowed.
2) No work which has been used by, or is slated to be used by, or has been submitted to any other convention is admissible.
3) Work submitted to us may not be submitted to any other convention without our approval until after winners are notified.
3 A) If your work is chosen, we ask that you not reuse the work until one convention year has passed after the Motaku year in which we use it.
3 B) If your work is not chosen, you may reuse it in any way you wish.
4) You may collaborate with other artists, but please send publications@motaku.org an email detailing all collaborators so Motaku can confirm the submission is valid.
5) Motaku reserves the right to merchandise the winning artwork for convention sales and marketing purposes.
6) Motaku reserves the right to make minor alterations to the artwork for use in specific applications.
7) Ownership of the art remains that of the Artist, Motaku reserves exclusive reproduction rights of the chosen art from the time chosen until one full year has passed after the convention date the artwork was used. After this time, all rights revert back to the artist. A contract detailing this will be sent to all winners.
Requirements to enter:
1) One finished piece, full color, at least 300dpi at a minimum size of 5.75″ x 8.75″ with a 5″x8″ live area, in pdf, psd, ai, png, or tiff.  If you have trouble email the file, please email publications@motaku.org to make other arrangements.

2) Should you create a theme, please detail it in the submission email.

Requirements if chosen:
1) At least 2 chibi images
2) Staff and attendee t-shirt art – vector art preferred, limited spot color paintings ok, we can send you a tutorial on how to paint in photoshop for shirt printing.

We may ask for specific pieces at larger resolutions for signage, and for other specific art needs within reason.

Cosplay Contests

Basic Information

We will again be splitting the Runway and Talent Show into two seperate events, on two seperate days, this practice will more than likely continue as long as Motaku does.
The runway will be fashioned as such, with three pose points that will be clearly marked on the floor, likely with tape or something similar. One will be located on the right side of the stage, one at the end of the runway, and one on the left of the stage.

Registration

  • All entrants will be required to fill out a registration sheet. All of the skit entrants must be listed, and all skit entrants must sign the form. ( i.e. There are 6 people in 1 skit. 6 people are listed on 1 entry form, all 6 participants sign that 1 sheet.)
  • These sheets will be available at the cosplay registration desk if you would like to fill them out the day of, or if you would prefer, there is a format at the bottom of this post, simply copy it, fill it out, and e-mail it to me at chitosei@mail.com with the subject heading: Motaku Runway Entry.
  • If you submit your registration electronically, YOU MUST STOP BY COSPLAY REGISTRATION TO SIGN THE PAPER. Unsigned entries WILL BE DROPPED.
  • Registration will close 3 hours prior to the event. NO ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THIS TIME! This allows us time to organize the entries and minimize chaos and confusion.

Green Room

  • Green room will be held an hour or two (depedant on what the scheduling chair allows for it) prior to the contest [The final time will be posted here in red as soon as the schedule is ready. Check back]. ATTENDANCE IS NOT OPTIONAL if you wish to participate. Failure to show up will result in the entry being dropped.
  • There will be a MAXIMUM of a 5 minute lee-way. This allows us time to run through any information, time for any craftsmanship questions from the judges, and time to look at the stage. Be there and ready to go, that hour goes fast.

Craftmanship Award

  • If you wish to submit your Cosplay for the craftsmanship award, please be ready with some form of documentation to present to our judges. It is your job to keep track of it until then.

Coloring Contest

  • Those who entered the Runway and skit portions last year will be familiar with the Greenroom coloring contest. This is available ONLY to runway and skit entrants. There WILL be a prize awarded for the person who colors best. The contest will begin as soon as greenroom does, and will officially end when the last contestant steps off of the runway. Crayons will be provided, you may not bring your own art media. Creativity scores extra points.

More than just cosplay

The runway is not ONLY for cosplay. We would like to see a variety of styles up there. Lolita, steampunk, candy, food-themed, traditional japanese, etc. If you can relate it to Japanese fashion trends or anime, We want to see it!

AWARDS

Last year we had some crossed wires on this one. As of right now, all awards for every contest will be presented at the closing ceremonies (there’s talk of it becoming more of an awards show than anything). If you win and are unable to attend, please notify the Fashion Director. THE WINNERS THEMSELVES WILL BE NOTIFIED AS SOON AS THE JUDGES HAVE MADE THEIR DECISION.
